Body hair.

Common perception of body hair (i.e. chest and stomach hair... and other places) on men is that it needs to be trimmed, shaved, "manscaped," naired, etc. Whatever the method, common perception is that it should be removed.

What the hell?

I was looking through several polls taken by women, concerning body hair preferences on men. Here are the results:

Age (and this one is important, as this is a fairly new trend):
15-20: 47%
Under 15: 15%
21-25: 14%
Over 30: 14%
26-30: 8%

Chest Hair: What do you prefer?
A guy with no hair on his chest: 49%
A guy with a little hair in the middle of his chest: 27%
A guy with a really hair chest: 16%
No opinion: 6%

Hair on the stomach:
A trail of hair that goes from the pubic hair up to the bellybutton: 50%
No hair at all: 32%
A lot of hair that continues up to the chest: 11%
No opinion: 5%

Leg Hair:
Hairy legs: 42%
Very little hair on the legs: 35%
Really hairy legs: 15%
No opinion: 6%

Armpit hair:
Very little hair: 41%
Hairy armpits: 37%
Really hairy armpits: 13%
No opinion: 7%

As you can see, the majority of these women have fairly unrealistic expectations of a man's body (except for the legs, for whatever reason). Here's an entertaining thought. Many women complain that if they have to shave their body hair, men should have to also. Take a look at this picture, though:





Here is a picture of the androgenic hair on women's body versus a man's body. As you can see, if the argument is "men should have to shave their body hair, because women have to also," that's not exactly fair. Most men have a hell of a lot more hair than women.

So, this entry really ends in a question: Why are so many people so hung up on body hair on men, who are meant to be hairy?

It's this new generation that believes men should be shaved until they look like plucked chickens.
